Home for the Holidays
Prepared, Not Panicked: What to Notice When You Go Home for the Holidays
The holidays are one of the few times each year when families truly see how Mom, Dad, or Grandma are doing beyond the phone calls and text messages. Sometimes everything looks great. Other times… something feels “off.”
Last year, I shared a video and post called “Preparing for Holiday Visits” that walks through what to notice when you visit aging parents or loved ones, things that might simply be part of normal aging, and things that could signal a need for extra support.
This year, I’m revisiting that message as part of my Prepared, Not Panicked series because being proactive is the greatest gift you can give your family.
Here are a few new reminders for 2025:
Trust your instincts. If something feels different, it probably is. Small changes often signal bigger shifts ahead.
Ask curious, not critical questions. Instead of “Why is this house such a mess?” try “Has it been harder to keep up lately?”
Look beyond health. How’s their tech use, mood, and social connection? Loneliness can accelerate decline more than we realize.
Notice patterns, not perfection. One messy day doesn’t equal crisis, but consistent confusion or missed meds might.
Start small conversations now. A gentle chat about safety, driving, or help with meals can open the door for bigger planning later.
Have (or revisit) a conversation about what matters most. Ask how they want to live and not just where. What brings them comfort, joy, or peace of mind? These talks don’t have to be heavy; they’re about honoring their values and preferences before a crisis.
As always, the goal is to be prepared, not panicked. This season, give yourself the peace of mind that comes from awareness, compassion, and a plan.
